Day 15: Marseille
It was too rainy in Lisbon and we were too busy in Barcelona, but we finally got a boat trip in! Chateau d'If is a fortress that was built in the 1500's and has had a pretty gruesome history. Everything ever written about it mentions it as one of the settings in The Count of Monte Christo, but I never read the book, so... It was built as fortification to protect Marseille, but was later turned into a gruesome prison that was famous for killing its prisoners through horrible living conditions and as a prison for French Protestants. For us? it was a lovely boat trip and a great view point. The ferry took us over to a couple of the other islands that have been joined afterwards where we had a beautiful walk.
