Day 2: Lisbon

It was castle day!

Where we are staying is very close to the Castelo de S.Jorge. The castle was started by the Moors in the 11th century as a fortification and became a royal home under the first king of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th century. In the 13th century, construction was finished to turn the fortification into a palace. The royal residence was turned into military barracks in the 17th and 18th centuries after Portugal became part of the Spanish crown in 1580. The buildings also suffered major damage in the 1755 earthquake.

Although there weren't any interior rooms to visit (save for one space which held a small museum), walking around the grounds and the towers was amazing. Caleb loved seeing all of the defensive building techniques and the cannons throughout and the view from atop the hill was amazing.
